The Turf Club vs. The Triple Rock.

Sometimes it happens...these nights where it's a difficult decision regarding which side of the River to stand on. I'm not here to tell anyone what to do (ever) as I hope both shows go well but The Turf Club wins for me this evening. Here are the details on both shows so you can make your own decision...

An Interview On Taping And The Taping Community Through Phish Eyes.

Disclaimer: I've never been to a Phish show and I can't name a song. I was inundated with Phish tapes in the dorms and it never stuck. I even had a crush on this one hippie girl from the East Coast who was super into Phish, not even she could sway me. I just can't get into The Jam. With that said many people whom I highly respect both play and record this popular genre.

Are you curious what's all involved with recording, processing and circulating shows? Are you bored at work and would just appreciate something to read? This is a really well done and extremely detailed interview with Chris Keiner from the Phish Listening Room and Lenny Stubbe one of the more active tapers amongst the Phish circuit today thanks to Phish.net.

Beyond the 'Boards: The Taping Tradition Lives On
Posted 3 days ago by tmwsiy

One can’t begin to discuss even the cursory history of Phish without mentioning the role of tapers and the taping community. After every show and tour, hundreds of padded envelopes criss-crossed the country and helped spread the gospel of Phish in a fashion similiar to the way bits & bytes travel the Internet now. From one to one trades, to complex trading trees, to blanks & postage offers, to taping parties, Phish tapes were constantly circulating. At the root of every chain and the beginning of every trade, was a taper who selflessley put recording the shows above all else.

Initially, it was with baited breath that people waited to receive tapes to even find out what was played last week. Likewise, with the arrival of a fresh batch of tapes it was an opportunity to hear a debut, to hear what all the buzz from a particular show was about or to hear a new cover torn to shreds the first time. As time went by, and set-lists become disseminated quicker through the internet, tapes were no longer needed to know what was played but rather as the first opportunity to listen to the magic that was happening elsewhere in the country. Though tapes have long since been replaced with digital, setlists are instantly updated live-time at current.phish.net or m.phish.net, LivePhish has the show available for download within an hour of the show ending, and you can stream the show as you leave the parking lot from the Phish app, there still exists an incredibly energized and dedicated taping community.

Empty's Eats: Flavor Bee's on Nicollet.

Man do I love some chicken wings. I can't help it. Sometimes I feel sad when I'm eating them but I do it anyway. My trips to the suburbs are extremely limited and unfortunately this means so is my access to multiple wing sauces. I know, I know, but they opened a BWW in Dinkytown...well that's Mesa Pizza country so that's what I eat when I'm over there. What's that? A wing place on 18th & Nicollet with 21 different sauces? Wings can be ordered in "traditional" or "boneless" as well as "party wings" or "whole wings."

"Party Wings"

Small 6 pcs $3.99
Medium 10 pcs $5.99
Large 16 pcs $8.99
X Large 20 pcs $10.99
Double 30 pcs $15.99
Family 50 pcs $25.99
Party 100 pcs $49.99

"Whole Wings"

Small 3 pcs $3.99
Medium 6 pcs $5.99
Large 12 pcs $9.99
X Large $14.99
Double 30 pcs $19.99
Family 50 pcs $29.99

So far this glutton has tried; Burning Buffalo, Crazy Buffalo, Fiery BBQ, Wild Terradactyl, Spicy Yin and Yang, Jamaican Jerk and Blazin' Jamaican. That pretty much covers all of the hottest sauces. Flavor Bee's is also a combination wannabe Chicago deli/fried fish shop but they do it very well and long lines have been forming. I'll post the menu below so you can see what else they offer. To be honest I've had the wings all 10 or so times I've been there but I've seen people stop in to order all kinds of stuff of the menu. Seems like everyone is always walking out the door with a smile on their face (sorry Lauren and Co!).

How about a tour of the spicier sauces?

While Wild Terradactyl is the spicy variation of Terradactyl they have a nice flavor without being over the top spicy.

Flavor Bee's offers 4 different levels of buffalo spiciness. Here are the Crazy Buffalo phone pic and all. I do really enjoy their buffalo sauce but I'd be hard pressed tell the difference between Burning and Crazy. At this point if I do go buffalo here I go Crazy.

The Spicy Yin and Yang are definitely tasty but I was again left wishing they were a bit spicier. I'd for sure order them again though.

The Blazin' Jamaican deliver on the heat while maintaining that traditional jerk flavor. These are nicely done and I would recommend them if you are looking for a spicy wing that's not just out to hurt you.

Here are the Fiery BBQ. Something was off with the BBQ sauce. I don't want to speak too ill of it because I've only had it the one time. Could have been an off batch but I would no doubt order BBQ wings here again...maybe switch it up with their Classic BBQ. I like to eat there and usually specify that right away. Make sure you're clear about that otherwise your wings get crammed together in a huge to-go-tin foil ball.

They're cool with mixing and matching. I'm a fan of the 5 & 5 ten piece. Note: you have to spend $5.99 to get your "Loyalty Card" punched anyways. Duh. Here we have 5 Spicy Yin & Yang and 5 Crazy Buffalo.

Bottom line is I really like this place and I hope they can make it. So many spots have been in this space but Flavor Bee's seems to have a good format going. My only two complaints are 1) I almost always call ahead but still end up sitting around for awhile no matter the time of day or night. Not a huge deal just saying. 2) Every once and a while you get that one wing where you ask yourself did they really just serve a wing this small on purpose? Again, that can happen at a lot of places so I'll give them a pass until it starts to happen more frequently. At that point I'll probably have to stop being so Midwestern about it and politely mention something. Much respect to Josh P. and Nallo.

This was the release show for Zebulon Pike's new LP Space Is the Corpse of Time. The Book of Right On and Battlefields supported. How can you complain about that bill? The Book of Right On? Seen them 8-9 times and they can do no wrong in my eyes. Everyone was glad to see Battlefields back on point and Zebulon Pike of course stole the show. That comes fairly easy for them. Welcome back from another European tour Fellas. Thanks to the bands and to The Triple Rock for allowing the 1s & 0s to be documented. Heard the new Zebulon Pike yet?

ps - Where's the rest of the set you ******* ****?! They played the album from start to finish with the addition of "And Blood Was Passion." The idea of people hearing a live recording before the real thing seemed silly to both Fancy Ray and I. Lo Siento.

Empty's Eats: Lotus To Go Go's Vegetable Pho

Vegetable pho at The Lotus. Click the photo to enlarge.

I refer to it simply as The Lotus and it's my favorite place to get pho in Minneapolis. Non-pho dishes are excellent as well. The Lotus is well known in the Loring Park and surrounding neighborhoods for their quality food. Chicken pho used to be my stand by but I've been really into the vegetable pho lately. Chili oil all around. Even during the summer I like getting it once or twice a month. Yoom is the man.

One of Australia's finest in my book. I definitely encourage you to check them out when they come through town. Given how much they tour chances are likely the opportunity will present itself. This was the recent tour with Young Widows. The Nina The Pinta (Mpls) supported. Please support the bands by picking up the official releases. Thanks to the bands and to The Triple Rock for allowing me to record.

What's that? More Grain Belt you say? You can see them supporting the Maledicere album release show with Thunderbolt Pagoda and Blood Folke. A show to end all shows. Leave Only What Is Fit To Burn.

"What About Love" (Heart)

Myspace | Soothing Almonds Collective

At the end of May I spent 3 nights at The Loring Theater recording Heliotrope Eight. Part of the fun of these 3 nights included running back and forth to Hell's Kitchen to record off the soundboard. Thank you Justin. Friday night was no different. I knew Littlefoot was opening for Aby Wolf and Her Claws and didn't want to miss out. I caught the first few songs but had to miss this closer getting back to Heliotrope. When I played the recording back I was happy to find that it did indeed make the set list. Thanks to Littlefoot and especially to the HK staff for tolerating my frantic short breathness (sic) as I came barreling down the stairs multiple times a night.

Tip of the day: If someone forcefully demands money from you on Nicollet Mall at 11:30pm turn that jog into a sprint and politely say "Hey, I gotta hit record. Later!"

Here are a few numbers from the last Sunday's inBOIL set at The Psychic School of Dream Actualization. Phil doesn't really care about things like "the internet" or "moving units" but if you would like a copy of the debut inBOIL album Mouthful of Guns try the myspace page or get in touch with me and I'll give him a ring for you. It is highly recommended. This recording is good and raw but sometimes music doesn't need a PA to be legit.

7.5 Gigs of Heliotrope.

People have been asking what was recorded at Heliotrope Eight. 7.5 gigs of audio is sitting on a hard drive at an undisclosed location in South Minneapolis. I recorded everything but the Milo Fine & Charles Gillett set per Milo's request. Albert's set is good to go but I'm not sure when others will be posted. Right now I'm enjoying the summer and not spending as much time inside behind a computer. Would anyone like to hear the Joe McPhee & Chris Corsano set on vinyl? That may or may not happen. A Live Heliotrope 8 Compilation to accompany the complication put out by the Festival? That will happen. Please check back for further updates.
