The Careless Talk EP is out now. It has my vote for local EP of the year and there are always a ton of great EPs released around here. Mel Gibson & the Pants, Kristoff Krane and El Guante & Big Cats opened. Thanks to the bands and the Turf Club for being down with taping.

Short but sweet set from Jesse and the Rippers to help celebrate the Nomad's 4th anniversary. Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapels, The Running Scared and DJ Turtleneck were also on the bill to provide musical enjoyment. Really nice sound on this IMHO. A few chatters during quiet passages but over all the audience enhances the tape. I meant to get this out over a week ago but you know how life can be distracting. Still beating the two week mark.

The new album was recorded in a cabin "up North" as well as in a South Minneapolis basement.

In all honesty you won't find me listening to a lot of "gangsta rap" unless I'm somewhere where someone else is controlling the stereo. With that said, I really like Muja and I'm putting this recording out to help promote his first official LP "Thee Adventures Of a B-Boy D-Boy." Muja Messiah has basically taken over the Northside as far as quality Rap goes. The "MPLS Massacre Vol. 1" mixtape is also available for purchase through CD Baby, Amazon & available for download if you look. DJ Turtleneck is one of my favorite Twin Cities DJs. Check out his tracks as well.

Muja Messiah and Mayda opened for Heiruspecs. Not sure who Muja's hypeman was. Another MC also came out and joined him on a track. As you can see there's a few tracks I'm not familiar with but I'm sure you'll enjoy them. Thanks to The Triple Rock for being the spot.

Great way to spend a Saturday night. Muja Messiah and Mayda opened. This was Mayda's CD Release show. All 3 sets were very solid and I think the recordings reflect that. Track 8 should really be two tracks but I caught it after everything was FLACed and ready to go. No overburn possible, please split disc two wherever you prefer. Heiruspecs has a number of official releases to pick up...

Hand Over Fist and Sims opened the P.O.S. "Never Better" Tour homecoming show.

So it's 12:30am and I can't sleep. Night cap? Sure. Checking the gmail and I see an 11:59pm email from Beak. It's permission to circulate the recent Hand Over Fist set. This is serious business. I can't sleep until this is out. Cocktail two. Let the FLACing begin. You see, this is pretty much a big deal because in the land of hip hop cats aren't fast to let tapes fly publicly or even permit taping to go down. I understand both the benefits of allowing it and not allowing it so I won't get into that. Let's just all be thankful we get this hear this piece of music though. This is the standard disclaimer for any live torrent but it's coming from deep down tonight; please support Hand Over Fist and pick up a copy of the album they put out in '08. Don't be afraid to also explore the rest of the DOOMTREE catalog. Thank you Beak & Mike. Goodnight.

After taping the P.O.S. show at First Avenue a friend and I went over to the Turf Club. Unfortunately we missed To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie but we did catch Lookbook and A Whisper in the Noise. This was the first AWITN show I had seen in a while and only the second one that's been played recently (missed the show at the Whole). I was told this was also the first show with this line up. Glad to see Steve behind the drums and Quinn back on cello. It was the Turf Club on a Saturday night. This makes taping bands with quiet passages interesting. With that said, the recording turned out quite nice in my opinion. Hopefully I'll get around to doing a matrix with the soundboard tape. AWITN have a number of official releases to check out. Lookbook and TKAPB are both amazing as well.

Sunday, March 01, 2009

Busy week indeed...

I've got torrents up from the Appleseed Cast show Tuesday. Thursday was another night spent at the Triple Rock. Beekeeper, All the Saints and Darker My Love opened for These Arms Are Snakes. Not a boring set in the bunch.

Unfortunately I didn't make it to the Cedar Friday night. Alexei curated another show as part of the 416 Club series including performances by Roma di Luna (duo), Eliza Blue, The Porchlights (Martin Devaney and Jake Hyer), The Floorbirds, Jack Torrey & Suzanne Vallie. I really wanted to record this show but it didn't happen.

Saturday night kept me going. The Never Better Tour made it's way home. It kind of goes without saying that Hand Over Fist (30mins), Sims (40mins) and P.O.S. (80+mins) all killed it at First Avenue. Afterwards we headed over to the Turf Club. Unfortunately we missed To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie's set but I was able to record Lookbook and A Whisper in the Noise. 3rd time seeing Lookbook and they are super sick. Go see them and buy the ep. On the AWITN front West put together a new band. Steve Yasgar, one of the best drummers in the Twin Cities happens to be behind the kit.
